Welcome to the 2013/2014 school year! I hope everyone had a great summer and is prepared for an exciting year. I am Mrs. Moore your student’s science teacher. This is my tenth year of teaching in Lake Shore and is truly an exciting year for me. Teaching middle school is my calling and I cannot wait to start meeting and building positive relationships with students.
Our curriculum: This year will focus on the study of Earth Science and its systems:
Trimester 1: Astronomy – the moon, sun, planets & stars,
Trimester 2: Earth Systems & Plate Tectonics – The Carbon Cycle, Earth Systems, Pangaea, Sea- Floor Spreading, Plate Tectonics, Earthquakes & Volcanoes
Trimester 3: Severe Weather, Climate, Ocean Currents & Renewable and Non-Renewable Resources
Supply list:
*Lined paper or notebook paper
*Pens & Pencils
*Colored pencils and/or crayons for journal entries (this will be used on a daily basis).
*Kleenex & Clorox wipes (not required but would be helpful for the long winter season, and students will earn extra credit)
Classroom Expectations:
*Students are to be in their seats and ready for class on time having all supplies they need for class (no locker passes will be given).
*Be respectful to the school and classroom environment, your peers, the staff, and guest teachers.
*Follow all lab safety procedures and pick up after yourselves. If you choose NOT to, loss of lab privileges will result.
*This is a gum free school
*Clear bottled water and a healthy snack is acceptable in the classroom (remember though it is a privilege and can be taken away if misused).
*Classroom behavior will be evaluated when determining student’s citizenship mark.
*Hall passes are for emergencies only so use your passing time wisely.
*The bell does not dismiss you I do!
Science Assignments:
*Homework will be assigned throughout the week that will help students gain a better understanding of what we are learning. Any assignment turned in on time receives full credit, but late assignments will marked down. There are several mini hands-on assignments, labs, quizzes, and tests given throughout the year.
*When a student is absent, it is their responsibility to collect from the daily folders or my website, all work they have missed to complete. Students will receive one make-up day for everyday they were absent. Please understand that due to the nature of some of our labs experiments an alternate science assignment may need to be completed when a student is absent.
*Each student is expected to do his or her best work. This means participating in classroom activities and discussions, asking questions for understanding, and learning through hands on activities.
Grading:
*Each assignment is out of 100%. However, assignments are weighted differently according to which category the assignment fits into. In other words assignments will count differently towards final grade. A student’s final grade will be weighted as follows:
-Homework/Class work: 15%
-Labs/Projects: 25%
-Assessments (quizzes/post-test) – 60%
Missing/Late work Policy:
*If students miss an assignment (not due to an absence) they will be “zapped”. When they turn in the assignment it will be accepted for reduced credit.
*However, once a trimester is over, work from that trimester will no longer be accepted.
*See attached explanation of ZAP program.
Classroom Blog Site:
*Every day I will provide parents and students with information about class work/homework and upcoming tests/quizzes/projects. The web address is at the top of the page and is the best way to help yourself/your student stay on top of things in my class.
*I strongly feel that a student’s success in school is a result of the cooperation, support, and communication between the parents, students, teachers and administrators.
*Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns throughout the school year (contact information is at the top of the page).
